Day 1: Arrive Alice Springs
On arrival, transfer to your hotel. Tour Alice Springs including the Old Telegraph Station, Royal Flying Doctor Service Base and the School of the Air. Get to know your fellow travelers over Welcome Drinks this evening. Overnight: Alice Springs, Voyages Alice Springs Resort
Day 2: Palm Valley—Kings Canyon
Travel to the West MacDonnell Ranges. Enter Finke Gorge National Park and travel the 4WD track along the Finke River. View the rich red stone and admire the ancient Red Cabbage Palm unique to Palm Valley. Stop at Hermannsburg, where the artist Albert Namatijra lived. Walk through the art gallery and learn about renowned Aboriginal artists. Continue on to Kings Creek Station traveling the Mereenie Loop Road. Overnight: Exclusive Kings Canyon Wilderness Lodge for 2 nights (B,L,D)
Day 3: Watarrka National Park, Kings Canyon
Enter Watarrka National Park and learn about the park on an escorted walk along the ridge of Kings Canyon. A less demanding (but unescorted) walk along the creekbed is also available. Tour Kings Creek Station and learn about station life in an arid environment. The remainder of the afternoon is free to relax. Optional scenic helicopter flights and escorted quad bike activities are available (own expense). Enjoy sunset drinks before dinner. (B,L,D)
Day 4: Kings Canyon—Uluru (Ayers Rock)
Travel to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas), a series of domes weathered down to an intricate maze of valleys and hollows. You’ll enjoy panoramic views of the domes and walk into Walpa Gorge. Witness the sunset with drinks and nibbles before joining our special Outback barbecue dining in the shadow of Uluru and after the sun has set marvel at the magnificent night sky. Day 5: Dot Painting Workshop
Rise early and enter Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park for spectacular views of Uluru at sunrise. The more energetic might like to take a walk around the base of Uluru. Learn about Uluru on a guided walk to Mutitjulu waterhole and sacred Kantju Gorge. Visit the Uluru Cultural Center, then join Aboriginal artists for an introduction to Aboriginal art. Try your hand at dot painting, the results of which are yours to keep. (B)
Day 6: Uluru (Ayers Rock)—Coober Pedy
Travel on the Victory Downs road past Atila (Mt Conner), a mesa in the middle of the Central Australian desert, then head to South Australia and the opal mining capital of Coober Pedy. Watch an opal cutting and polishing demonstration tonight. Overnight: Coober Pedy, Desert Cave Hotel, with some rooms underground (B,L,D)
Day 7: Coober Pedy – Alice Springs
Enjoy a tour of this town where most of the population live and work underground. See a working mine and the underground church. Join the Stuart Highway and head back to Alice Springs. Overnight: Alice Springs, Voyages Alice Springs Resort (B,D)
Day 8: Alice Springs—Darwin
After breakfast, 8-Day guests depart.
Head to the airport and fly to Darwin (airfare not included). Be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel. Overnight: Darwin, Mantra Pandanas (B)
Day 9: Litchfield National Park, Katherine Gorge Dinner Cruise
After breakfast, travel to Litchfield National Park where you will view Florence and Tolmer Falls, enjoy a swim at Wangi Falls and see the unique Magnetic Termite mounds. At Adelaide River visit the War Cemetery. Continue along the Stuart Highway to Katherine and enter Nitmiluk National Park for a dinner cruise on Katherine Gorge. Overnight: Katherine, Knotts Crossing Resort (B,D)
Day 10: Katherine—Kakadu National Park
Travel to Kakadu National Park and Gunlom Falls where you can swim in the waterhole. Continue to Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Center then join a sunset cruise on Yellow Water Billabong. Overnight: Kakadu National Park, Gagudju Lodge Cooinda (B,D)
Day 11: Kakadu—Mt Borradaile, Arnhem Land
Take a walk along the Cooinda waterfront. At the Bowali Visitors Center, learn about the park and its cultural significance. Visit the Ubirr World Heritage cultural site, with ancient rock art and spectacular views. With permission from the traditional owners, ford the East Alligator River and travel to Arnhem Land for a billabong sunset cruise. Overnight: Mt Borradaile Safari Camp (facilities are basic in this remote area) (B,D)
Day 12: Mt Borradaile—Kakadu
Perhaps try barramundi fishing with a guide (own expense). Tour by 4WD, cruise the waterways and trek to Mt Borradaile. Admire rock art believed to date back 50,000 years and gain an insight into one of the world’s oldest surviving cultures. Overnight: Jabiru, Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn (B,L,D)
Day 13: Kakadu—Darwin
